In the more specialized market for music servers, it still takes pricey and heat-generating DSP horsepower to handle higher sample rates.

Remember the hue and cry that went up when it was revealed that even top-of-the-line processors downsampled everything to 48kHz in order to use Audyssey EQ? Nothing has changedincreasing DSP horsepower to enable higher sample rates costs money for something that the vast majority of buyers don't care or even know about. Those of us who use home-theater preamplifier-processors and audio/video receivers (AVRs) should be familiar with such constraints. In addition, because most EQ products work within a limited range of sampling rates, PCM files sampled at high rates may have to be downsampled before being subjected to EQ. Because most EQ software is PCM-based, format comversion is needed to convert DSD files to PCM. To workaround this issue, go to the SHIELD TV Settings -> Display & Sound -> Advanced Settings -> Surround sound -> change from Auto or Always to Never to force stereo mode. One of the recurring themes of this column has been my search for servers that will support the playback of high-resolution multichannel files with DSP for speaker/room equalization (EQ), as well as the format conversion and downsampling that are often part of those processes. Some devices will incorrectly advertise Dolby Digital Plus support to the SHIELD TV even though it cannot decode this format. If the SHIELD TV Surround setting is set to AUTO and the device it is connected to cannot decode Dolby Digital Plus, the SHIELD TV will not send the audio in surround Dolby Digital Plus format. The TV or audio receivers supported audio formats are sent to the SHIELD TV when it is connected over HDMI.

It will display all of the audio modes that the SHIELD TV detects as shown in the image below. To check which audio formats the device connected to your SHIELD TV supports, go to SHIELD TV Settings -> About -> Status -> HDMI -> Audio mode. If your TV or receiver cannot decode Dolby Digital Plus, you will not get any audio when streaming content using Dolby Digital Plus. The SHIELD TV passes the bitstream audio to your TV or receiver over HDMI. Some video streaming apps use Dolby Digital Plus (DD+/E-AC-3) to send 5.1 multi-channel audio to your TV or audio/video receiver.
